Do you know the .crypto or .eth domains ? Do you know that they are not only web domains? Web3 domains are much more than that…they are the key to the true internet of value .
Now with a decentralized domain, you will be able to point not only to a web page, but you will also be able to connect your different crypto wallet addresses , even if they are from different networks.
Domains are something very important in the world of digital marketing, since they are the first counter to your audience, as well as a positionable keyword in search engines, so choose wisely.
What is a decentralized domain?
Centralized domain names are extensions like .com , .net , .biz and hundreds more. These domains are controlled by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and are purchased through a domain registrar such as GoDaddy , Bluehost , or other providers. The content of your site is hosted on a server.
Unlike this structure of web 2.0 . With the internet of value and blockchain technology, decentralized domains or blockchain domains appear, which is used for much more than pointing to a website.
Decentralized domains, on the other hand, with extensions like .crypto , .eth , .bit and others, are stored on decentralized networks , as the name suggests, not in a single location, making them impossible to remove or censor .
Blockchain domains, therefore, are valuable because they remove the need to trust a centralized authority like ICANN .
Invest in blockchain domains?
An example: Sex.eth
If you are a person who knows the internet since the ’80s, ’90s , then surely you have lived through the internet and .com boom .
Well, the same can happen with the scene of decentralized domains. The clear example of this was the news that spread in various media about the sale of the sex.eth domain for no less than 230 ETH (approximately USD $90,000 at that time).
The truth is that domains have been a business for many speculators, who buy “premium” domains or those with the potential to generate interest for other buyers… There are news of domains sold for stratospheric numbers, so you have to be aware.
If I had to choose a preferred decentralized domain DAPP, it would be, as of today, Unstoppable domains . Why? Well, for various reasons…
The main one for me is that the domains that you can currently purchase: .crypto and .zil , are domains that do not require an annual subscription. These domains are non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that you buy once and can automatically store in your cryptocurrency wallet.
For example, I have already acquired 3 .crypto domains since they are very versatile and why not, they are cool… And the cost of each domain (not premium) is USD $40 . It is not cheap, but if you think that you only pay it once, it is much more worthwhile than a domain on a .com website with more than 10 years of history…
Connect your Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and other wallets. Create your own decentralized website or use it to connect to different DAPPs in the ecosystem. Unstoppable domains tends to release new features and news regularly, so it is worth following them
Ethereum Name Services (ENS)
If you are 100% Ethereum and don’t want to know about other shitcoins… then surely .eth domains are your favorites.
The truth is that Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domains are also applicable for multi-cryptocurrency wallets, like Unstoppable domains. However, ENS has a good reputation and has some features that make it stand out from the other options.
.eth domains can be owned by subscription , you can’t buy it forever like .crypto or .zil.; which can be a disadvantage , or at least that’s how I see it; although you ensure the availability of domains over the years.
Personally they are my 2 favorite services, although as we see below, we have more options; and more to come…
Finally, I propose a third option, if you are looking for other domains with extensions like .bit , .coin , .neo and other variables, I suggest PeerName.com .
You have to review each domain to see its operational network or if it is applicable to point to multiple cryptocurrency addresses as in the previous options.
But in general, the prices are cheap, with a typical renewal scheme and with the possibility of paying with both FIAT and crypto.
PeerName is a company founded in 2014, which is why it is one of the pioneers in the industry , so not because it is the last option in the article, it is the worst among them.
In addition to all this, I find it interesting that they have a web extension to make it much easier to navigate the web 3 and your own blockchain domains (in case you are not a developer, like me).
With the passage of time I am sure that we will start to see more blockchain domain services ; and much more interest from web3 users to acquire them. Just look at the evolution of the .com in the ’90s.
But for now, what do you think? Do you think we will catch up with traditional domains, DNS and ICANN? Leave a comment with your preferred option and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and Youtube for blockchain news.
