Bruce Willis stepping away from acting after aphasia diagnosis: ‘A really challenging time, Bruce Willis’ daughter Rumer Willis announced on social media that her father is retiring from acting due to health issues.

“Die Hard” and “Pulp Fiction” star “has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is affecting his cognitive abilities,” according to a statement. In a joint statement from his family, Rumer Willis wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.

“As a result of this, and after much thought, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him,” the post continued.

Aphasia is a “language disorder caused by damage in a specific area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension,” according to Johns Hopkins. It can make it difficult for a person to communicate and converse with others.

“This is a very difficult time for our family, and we are grateful for your continued love, compassion, and support,” the family said in a statement. “We’re going through this as a strong family unit, and we wanted to invite his fans in because we know how much he means to you as well as he does to us.”

Demi Moore, Willis’ ex-wife and close friend of Willis and his wife Emma Heming Willis, Bruce Willis stepping away from acting shared the same message on her Instagram account.

Moore dedicated a post to the actor, who turned 67 recently, with a photo of the two and the caption: “Bruce, have a wonderful birthday! We are grateful for our extended family.”

Willis’ iconic characters include boxer Butch Coolidge in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” action-seeking police detective John McClane in the “Die Hard” movie series and the not-so-alive child psychologist in thriller “The Sixth Sense.” 

Willis had been working steadily and frequently. He has shot numerous action thrillers that are expected out in 2022, including “Gasoline Alley,” “A Day to Die” and “Fortress: Sniper’s Eye.”
